Hair Loss: Is it Male Heredity or..

Hair loss is not only male heredity and vanity, but a disease that effects many women. There are several cases where hair loss is expected. It is normal to lose significant amounts of hair in the last few months of pregnancy or for three or four months after childbirth. The hair usually re-grows by the time the baby is six months old, and hormonal changes are the cause. It is also normal for women after menopause to experience thinking hair, particularly to the front, and greying hair with age. Hair loss is also hormone-related, and much can be done to prevent and often reverse it. Radiation to the head or chemotherapy for cancer will cause hair loss, often total, which regrows after the therapy is stopped. Beyond these things, sudden falling out of women’s hair in large quantities or in patches is called alopecia. With holistic methods the loss can usually be stopped and very often the hair will regrow, though usually less fully than before.

Glandular imbalances are a major cause of hair loss in women, with the adrenals, thyroid (low thyroid) or pituitary glands involved. Stress, which depletes these glands, and emotional or physical trauma or shock are other causes. Nutritional deficiencies can cause both hair loss and greying in women. Other factors include poor scalp circulation illness or surgery, diabetes, too harsh shampoos, hair dyes and hot dryers, fevers, heavy metal poisoning, anemia, alcohol and smoking.

Naturopathy: Emphasis is on a diet of whole foods. Some beneficial foods include onions, garlic, egg yolks, mustard greens, alfalfa, raw greens, carrots, seafood’s and sea vegetables, seeds, whole grains and wheatgerm. Use a glass of meals; it remineralizes and aids assimilation of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. Use apple cider vinegar as a hair rinse.

When washing hair, alternate hot and cold head sprays in the shower, starting with hot and always ending with cold, three or four times. Massage the scalp daily with the fingers or a vibrator to increase circulation. Drink barley water, green drink (wheat-grass juice) three times a day. Take a teaspoonful of olive oil, wheatgerm oil or fish liver oil daily. A quarter cup of onion juice with a tablespoon of honey can be used as a daily scrub massage.

Aromatherapy: Put three to four drops of cedarwood or rosemary, bay, clary sage or ylang ylang in a tablespoon of olive oil. Rub into the hair the night before shampooing.

Emotional Healing: Fear and anxiety are a major cause of hair loss in women, as well as of greying hair. There is a belief that strain and pressure and necessary in daily living. Can you learn to relax and trust life? Can you make things easy?
